About Falmouth

Falmouth University Scholarships are established by the British Council and the UK government’s GREAT Britain Campaign, in partnership with UK higher education institutions. Falmouth University is a specialist public university for the creative industries situated in Falmouth and Penryn, Cornwall, England.

It was established as the Falmouth School of Art in 1902, the University has previously been known as Falmouth College of Art and Design and then Falmouth College of Arts until 2012- when the University College was officially granted full University status by the Privy Council.

Falmouth University is based in Penryn and Falmouth. The Penryn Campus, near the town of Penryn, is the larger of its two campuses, which it operates in partnership with the University of Exeter. The university’s Campus is in Falmouth town center.

The University has about 7,000 students, offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Falmouth University was established as Falmouth School of Art in 1902, in response to the diminution of scientific activities in Cornwall that was brought about by the decline of the Cornish mining industry.

However, the Student Union, “FXU”, is the representative body of the students of Falmouth University and the University of Exeter, Cornwall Campus, on the campuses of Falmouth and Penryn. FXU conducts events for students all through the year, facilitates community action and volunteering, provide opportunities for sporting involvement- and offers student welfare advice.

It was regarded by the National Union of Students in the 2015 NUS awards- when it won ‘Small and Specialist Student Union of the Year’, Green Impact Gold, and Non-Commercial Students’ Union of the Year. It was also runner up in the UKCISA ‘Most Internationalized Students’ Union of the Year.

It is also home to the courses of BA(Hons)Fashion Design, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Performance Sportswear Design, Sustainable Product Design, and Public Relations, and provides facilities for MA Creative Advertising and MA Illustration: Authorial Practice.

However, due to the projected high intake for September 2012, the campus underwent changes to accommodate this, with the first floor of the library being transformed into BA Graphic Design studios following denial of planning permission to build upon the already existing graphic design department building.
